Same deal with the fire effects, you can actually see the pixels being blurred in some places (and I really think they’re doing the effects textures disservice by running them at like 50% alpha or something, I just hate it when games do that to good fire textures! It makes 'em all blurry and the color look off, totally kills the punch of it). Just too close to a low-detail model, I imagine this viewpoint should never really be seen in-game.

There are so obvious issues with the models: looking at the rhino guy, you can see whatever shadow-casting trick they’re using reveals triangles where the feet meet the legs especially, and the skin does some weird breaks and warps on the chest and belly. Interesting what they’re doing with blurred backgrounds (not sure if it’s a good idea, but possibly interesting). This looks likes it’s being made on a lower budget than AAA titles and they’re taking close-in promo screenshots of low-poly models which should be viewed from a, ah, tactical perspective. The graphics here do look surprisingly weak in some respects. Later, perhaps starting with Mirage (if I recall?) they tightened up direction and made a much more consistent product but one which is much less interesting from an artistic perspective in my opinion. The style was all over the place and you got a great range of interpretation. I really liked how early MTG cards had much lighter art direction and more artistic control. The card game, I mean none of the electronic versions ever grabbed me. I was really, really into Magic quite a few years ago.
